The Exmoor Ponies of Hindhead Common

It’s been a while since I’ve been down to Hindhead Common, and although the ponies are often easy to find, this time I had to do a substantial bit of trekking in order to track them down. Grazing of the heathland by commoners ended around the mid-1900s allowing the spread of birch, pine and bracken, so the ponies were moved in a few years back to reclaim the land. Highland Cattle too, apparently, although I’ve never seen any of these.

I used to think that the ponies recognised me and we’re pleased to see me, but I’ve now come to the realisation that they’re only interested in the carrots I have stuffed in my pockets.
